Although the huge 1970s singing ensemble Up With People performed at four halftime shows (1976, 1980, 1983 and 1986), they weren’t really the most memorable.
Halftime shows after that became a huge viewer magnet-big productions with multi-million dollar commercial viability. That year, during the broadcast of Super Bowl XXXVIII, Justin Timberlake exposed her breast on live television for about half a second near the end of their performance, giving the phrase “wardrobe malfunction” a permanent place in the nation’s entertainment lexicon.
The Rolling Stones followed McCartney in 2006, performing a 12-minute set on a giant stage shaped like the band’s iconic lips and tongue logo. All were forgotten when Timberlake sang, “gonna have you naked by the end of this song”, and nearly delivered, tearing off part of Jackson’s costume to reveal her bare breast.
For sheer musical mastery, this is hard to beat. The flamboyant musician rocked the crowd with a few of his own hits as well as some Queen and Bob Dylan covers before entertaining more than 74,000 football fans watching in a downpour with a little Purple Rain. And after a month or so, people will just forget!’ ” the frontman recalled what his daughter said to him.
The next year, when Gloria Estefan performed at Super Bowl XXVI in Minneapolis, the Fox network siphoned an estimated 20 million viewers from the proceedings by airing a live episode of the sketch comedy “In Living Color” at halftime. “We were on the phone, and I said, ‘What do you think about this?’ He said, ‘Oh, it’s not one of your best, Chris.’ And that was it”, Martin said. Idina Menzel performed the song for last year’s big game.
However, the SB halftime shows weren’t that entertaining before.
Beyonce headlined the 2013 Pepsi Super Bowl XLVII halftime show at the Superdome in New Orleans, where she was reunited and joined by her all-girls Destiny Child’s bandmates, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.
