Google’s Senior vice president of search, Amit Singhal, is leaving the company after joining in 2000.

Google’s decision to replace Singhal by the AI Chief John Giannandrea, indicates the company’s desire to make its search engine more sophisticated said analysts. In a blog post on Google+, Singhal wrote that he will be concentrating on his family and philanthropy after this. This further shows how the use of AI in Google’s search results makes it smarter each day.
He has worked in the field of search for over twenty years, first as an academic researcher and later as a Google engineer.
The elevation of Giannandrea represents a further emphasis on the importance of artificial intelligence to Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc. At Google Singhal, oversaw the search quality team, the team responsible for Google’s search algorithms. Artificial intelligence is increasingly behind advances in how Google answers search queries.
Apple reportedly bought AI startup Emotient last month.
“A.I.is becoming increasingly important to extract knowledge from Google’s sea of data, particularly when it comes to classifying and recognizing patterns in videos, images, speech and writing”, said Carlos Kirjner, an analyst at Bernstein Research.
Google’s DeepMind artificial-intelligence division developed a program that recently beat one of the world’s best players of the board game Go, a challenge that experts thought wouldn’t be met for a decade. Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai said the technology has been key to recent efforts in search on mobile devices and personal assistant technologies. Giannandrea’s new title will be VP of engineering, according to Bloomberg. Singhal also pointed out how his dream of building Strek Trek computer is getting closer to reality.

I love Google. It is a company that believes in doing the right thing, a company that believes in doing good in the world, a company… that cares.
