What Turnout in the Last Five Iowa Caucuses Tells Us About 2016

Iowa is not, in other words, a small microcosm of the United States who’s vote will be matched on a larger scale.

It’s not even certain that Iowans and New Hampshire voters will agree. People who still can’t make up their mind join a group known as “uncommitted”.

In the Democratic caucus in Iowa it’s not about the popular vote, but instead about amassing the most delegates. It also begins the presidential race in earnest.

Clinton will hold a caucus night party starting at 8:30 p.m.at the Olmsted Center on the Drake University campus in Des Moines. Special guests will include President Bill Clinton and the couple’s daughter, Chelsea Clinton.

“The expectation now is this is a very close race”, said Hoffman, of the University of Northern Iowa.

With 254 voters packing the library Monday night, it surpassed 2008 totals there for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.

Anyway, let us know what you think! This is true of both parties, but particularly of the GOP, which desperately needs to broaden its appeal beyond white voters.

Trump’s mission: Get these new voters to show up on Monday night.

Does an Iowa victory guarantee a party nomination? In Iowa politics, it is the tiny things that count. “It’s about narrowing the field”.

The payoff comes Monday when the Iowa caucuses launch the presidential nominating process, giving some candidates a boost and likely ending the White House hopes of others who fare poorly.

View an explanation of the process in the video player above. Iowa offers the chance for candidates to test the waters in a state that won’t break the campaign bank, and well-organized campaigns can send their candidates criss-crossing the state to shake as many hands and knock on as many doors as possible.

NDSU Political Science Professor Dr. Nick Barouth says you can’t win the nomination in Iowa, but you can lose almost all hope.

To measure the impact of this, consider what the race would look like if much more diverse states – say Florida or New Mexico or Nevada or NY – went first. After Iowa, New Hampshire is just a little over a week away.

Polls now give Vermont Sen.

Not that polls can be trusted.

And as Trump noted, he enjoys a huge lead with only a week to go before the New Hampshire primary.

Unlike primaries, which are administered by state and local governments, Iowa’s caucuses are overseen by party leaders.

Voter selection numbers for the past six presidential election cycles – 1992 through 2012 – prove that Iowa’s vote more closely matches the national general election results than any other state. A head count is taken to determine each precinct’s victor. Even before the results were final, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley ended his longshot bid for the Democratic nomination. Since George W. Bush achieved the feat in 2000, recent Iowa winners Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum have later been clobbered nationally. Neither went on to win the party’s nomination.

Had he slowly built toward a second-place finish to Cruz — poised to win Iowa based on his impeccable credentials among evangelical and social conservatives so important in the state — perceptions of his result would have been much more favorable. That year, 3,262 voters registered as Democrats over the same timeframe.

While caucuses for both parties are more grassroots-oriented in nature than primaries, Republican and Democratic caucuses differ procedurally. Will Iowa voters feel the Bern? To win a candidate must do well across geographical precincts not just in major cities.

In reality, Iowa represents a cross-section of America in terms of party preference and ideology.

Paine Caulfied says a savvy precinct captain can make the difference. Basically, picture Don Draper selling a person to a bunch of Republicans and you’ve got the idea. “It’s whether can you get average, rank-and-file voters to get out and vote for you on a cold February day”.
