Robert Durst pleads guilty to gun charge in New Orleans

Durst, who jumped bail in 2001 after being charged with the murder of a neighbor in Galveston, Texas, pleaded guilty in 2004 to interstate transportation of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a fugitive from justice.

A NY real estate heir pleaded guilty in New Orleans on Wednesday to a weapons charge and agreed to an 85-month prison sentence, a move that could usher in his extradition to California to face murder charges.

It was unclear whether the recording of Durst’s comments could be used in court, some legal experts said, since they were made in a bathroom when he was alone and had an expectation of privacy.

Durst admitted that he illegally carried a.38-caliber revolver after being convicted of a felony.

Under the deal, he will be extradited to Los Angeles, where he is expected to face charges that he murdered his friend Susan Berman in 2000.

These words, muttered by NY real estate heir and suspected serial killer Robert Durst in the finale of HBO’s documentary series The Jinx, sent chills down the spines of viewers and put Durst back in the spotlight. Durst was the subject of an HBO documentary where he was recorded admitting to murder.

Durst is scheduled to arrive in California no later than August 18 to be arraigned for Berman’s killing. Durst denied the accusation, but a live microphone later captured whispering that he had “killed them all”.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office provided this photo of Robert Durst after he was arrested in New Orleans on March 14, 2015, on a warrant out of Los Angeles County.

Durst’s high-profile lead criminal defence attorney, Dick DeGuerin, has argued that the audio was not a confession, just Durst’s commentary on how his accusers see him.

Durst was found with a gun he’s not allowed to possess as a felon.

“It’s our objective…to “clear the decks” of anything and everything that would delay Bob’s transfer to California so we can start preparing for trial in the Susan Berman case”, attorney Richard DeGuerin said, said according to the New York Post. He had more than $44,000 and a package of $117,000 was en route to New Orleans for him.

McMahon, the prosecutor, described the murder prosecution against Durst in Los Angeles as “a tough case”.

Durst was soft spoken in court, chained at the hands and feet, wearing an orange prison suit, and said he had trouble hearing.
