Nearly a week ahead of the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft has announced that Cortana, its virtual assistant, will be rolled out (on Windows 10) in India and other new markets via the Windows Insider Program for beta testers. Also make sure the controller is plugged into your PC and not the Xbox, so you’ll either need a wired Xbox 360 or Xbox One controller, or a wireless receiver.

It will be available to “Windows Insiders” first with general availability to follow.

“I think many other devs will share my feelings, so it could be an important new era for the apps on Windows Phone, as Microsoft uses the clout of its desktop-share to bring developers in”. Updates and new features will be rolled out on individual timescales, too; users won’t have to wait for bundles in a 10.1, for example. In a statement, Microsoft told Re/code, “The license terms for Windows 10 require Automatic Updates be enabled as part of keeping our customers secure and delivering Windows as a service”. From this point, the continued updates will continue to be free for as long as the same devices are in working order. The Xbox app on Windows 10 will update the moment a new version is available.

The life of this OS, as reported by Microsoft, will initially last until October 13, 2020 in mainstream support.

October 14, 2015 marks the end of extended support. The best way to think of the two are like warranties. “They’ll expect their devices to listen to them”.

Mainstream support offers, “a minimum of 5 years from the date of a product’s general availability”.
