In the latest sign that automakers are still struggling to understand the scope of the Takata air bag crisis, Honda Motor said on Wednesday that it would expand its recall by more than a third in North America.

Takata was faulted for having a company culture that failed to emphasize quality by a panel the Tokyo-based manufacturer appointed to review its manufacturing.

Honda will voluntarily recall 23,343 units of 2008-2010 model-year Honda Accord Sedans in Canada to replace the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit.

In some cars, air bags on both the driver and passenger side have been recalled.

Continental followed Honda’s lead on Thursday, recalling 5 million vehicles due to the airbag controller defect.

“This is the largest, most expensive recall problem in history and it will take the longest time to resolve”, said Kart Brauer, senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book. Until the vehicles are identified, customers won’t be able to use Honda’s and NHTSA’s online databases to check their vehicle identification numbers for the recall.

Certain airbags manufactured by Continental can fail in as many as five million cars from at least four manufacturers, according to filings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Honda said it has two reports of people being hurt because the air bags didn’t deploy.

“The silver lining for consumers is that once the recall fix is completed, there should not be any detrimental impact to their vehicle’s retained value”, Ibara said.

Fiat Chrysler said it is recalling 112,000 USA vehicles for the same issue, including the 2009 Dodge Journey, 2008-2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country and 2009 Volkswagen Routan that it had assembled for the German automaker.

The recall is unrelated to a separate one involving airbags made by Takata Corp.

Honda previously has recalled more than 6 million US vehicles since 2008 to replace defective Takata inflators.

So far, faulty Takata airbags have been linked to 10 deaths, the most recent one occurring in December.
