The major supermarket chain had recalled certain salad products because of a possible Salmonella outbreak on a suppliers property.

“Tripod Farmers has recalled the following products from Coles, Bi-Lo (VIC, NSW, SA, NT & ACT), Woolworths (ACT, VIC & NSW) and trade outlets in NSW, QLD, VIC, SA, NT and ACT due to microbial (salmonella) contamination”, the notice said.

“We have taken immediate steps to replace the lettuce supplier in question with a new supplier and any salad meals in next week’s menu (Week C) will not be affected by the current recall”.

An “arachnophobic” family in Australia got the shock of their lives after they bought a bag of salad from their local grocery store – when they found a Huntsman spider lurking inside.

The affected products have best before dates leading up to and including February 14.

“Normally we only see a handful of cases of this strain each year, but so far this year there have been 28 cases of Salmonella anatum, mostly adults, notified to the department”, he said.

The Victorian health authorities also tested two batches of the lettuce products and found three products positive for the salmonella anatum bacterium.

As a result, Tripod Farmers is issuing a nation-wide recall of its products.

An inspection of the premises has been undertaken and a full and thorough clean-up has been carried out. The elderly, children, those with another medical condition or who are malnourished are more prone to the illness.

Symptoms of salmonella, which occur between six to 72 hours after the bacteria is ingested, include diarrhoea, fever, headache, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and dehydration.
