Family members of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on Saturday expressed happiness over the declassification of over 100 secret files and suggested setting up of a committee to study them and inform the public about the various landmarks in his life.

The “Netaji Files” released by the government on Saturday revealed that the country’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had sought to send financial aid to Subhash Chandra Bose’s wife Emilie Schenkl in 1952.

Interestingly, both the leaders had written to the Centre seeking appointment of inquiry commission at a time when the country was witnessing centenary celebrations of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

The Tokyo-based Bose Academy, most of whose members were ageing veterans of the Indian National Army raised by Netaji, had informed the Rao government that it would be observing the last memorial prayer in 1995, the 50th death anniversary of Bose.

These files, being placed in the public domain after preliminary conservation treatment and digitisation, will also facilitate further research on Netaji’s struggle for India’s freedom.

On whether the declassifying cleared the mystery of Netaji’s death, he said, “We did’nt expect that”.

Describing Abe as an admirer of Netaji, Bose said: “At the outset, Modi should have spoken to him”. The trust was funded by the Congress with Nehru as one of its trustees and Rs 1500 was sent every quarter to Anita and her mother Emilie Schenkl Bose. “We feel these files would be able to throw some light on it”. Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today visited the National Archives for the launch of the digitized files.

In 1997, the National Archives had received 990 declassified files pertaining to the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) from the Ministry of Defence.
