Snapdeal drops Aamir Khan as its brand ambassador

The e-retail company has reportedly decided not to renew the actor’s contract as its brand ambassador. Sources also hint that Khan might not even be replaced by another celebrity because the company is looking forward to rationalise ad expenditure and focus instead on repeat customers and enhancing shopping categories. Before this, Snapdeal had extensively featured Khan in its “Dil Ki Deal” print, television and digital campaigns.

Khan courted massive controversy in November previous year when he revealed that his family had contemplated leaving India in the wake of a number of violent incidents – including the mob lynching of a Muslim man in Dadri on charges of beef consumption and the burning alive of two Dalit children. “It could have shown great character if it had stood by Khan”.

Irate consumers had downgraded Snapdeal’s app on the Google Play Store following Khan’s comments, prompting the company to distance itself from him. The actor said his wife has wondered out loud if they should relocate from India. “We will continue towards our mission of creating one million successful online entrepreneurs in India”. Apparently the said contract that was signed a year back was extendable; however Snapdeal isn’t keen on renewing the same.

It may also be recalled that Khan was recently dropped as the mascot of “Incredible India” campaign.

However, the protests continued and the government took the first step by removing the well known actor who has received the highest national awards and never been questioned for his credentials, from the Incredible India campaign.
