Typical Facebook users are now 3.57 degrees apart, said the company, as opposed to 3.74 degrees of separation in 2011.
In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg said “friendsday” is “a moment to celebrate the friendships that have made a difference in your life”.
Most Facebook users should start seeing the videos at the top of their Facebook feeds by noon. For in a combination of sentimentality (“the power of friendship”) and detached, corporate blandness (“we invite the world to reflect on the importance of connecting”), Facebook has declared today “Friends Day”.
Friends Day is also an occasion to celebrate extraordinary stories about the power of friendship.
This year, the social network is marking the milestone, which it has dubbed “Friends Day”, with a new personalized video feature that weaves together memories with friends into shareable video clips.
The group included GirlCrew, a Facebook group originally created in Dublin, which empowers women to find friends and organise events in their area. As it turns out, there are, on average, only 3.57 degrees of separation between any two people on the social media site.
Consider that not so long ago, conventional wisdom had it that every person on the planet were separated by six degrees.
Zuckerberg recently announced that WhatsApp had surpassed one billion active users, with Facebook’s own Messenger app also active for 800 million people.

Facebook has also reminded people of how important it has become to keeping people close in the world. There are two new stickers packs called “Best Friends and ‘Friendship.’ They’re available for free from the Sticker Store”.
