AAP urges LG to intervene in civic workers’ strike

The court observed that due to the rift between the BJP-ruled MCD and AAP-led Delhi government, common people are suffering and are facing inconvenience.

After Arvind Kejriwal’s Rs 550 crore loan, it is Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung’s turn to make a contribution to end the sanitation workers’ strike that is stinking up the city.

Unions representing striking MCD employees, however, refused to budge despite both developments.

It said the Delhi government had already released an amount of Rs 693 crore and the additional Rs 300 crore would take the amount to a total of Rs 1000 crore which will take care of the salaries of all employees and officials of three MCDs till March 31, 2016. The police say they fear breakout of an epidemic in Delhi. On Wednesday, the Delhi government had announced a financial assistance of Rs 693 crore to the civic bodies out of which Rs 551 crore was loan. The MCD employees are demanding a permanent solution to the problem.

He added that the pending arrears of the workers can be paid only after the implementation of the Fourth Pay Commission. The police on Friday wrote a letter to the Delhi government on the ongoing MCD strike.

Delhi High Court will resume hearing on the matter today afternoon.

The PIL filed by advocate Birinder Sangwan has sought imposition of the provisions of the ESMA to force safai karamcharis (sanitation workers) to come back to work, claiming that sanitation was an “essential service”, and the strike by the workers should be declared “illegal”.

Delhi HC issued a notice to the the central and the Delhi governments, and the civic bodies, taking a serious note of the situation that has also occurred earlier leading to roads being strewn with garbage.
