Bowie County Sheriff’s Office warns about IRS phone scam

The caller continues to intimidate by threatening to confiscate the recipient’s property, freeze bank accounts, and have them arrested and placed in jail. “Some schemes may say you’re entitled to a huge refund”.

Walsh reassures the public that his office would not call to demand payments. Many of these con games peak during filing season as people prepare their tax returns or hire someone to do so.

Those aggressive IRS scam calls plaguing KELOLAND have cost South Dakotans tens of thousands of dollars so far. Do not fall victim to this kind of scam.

A scam involving taxes is sweeping across Columbia County. They may use the victim’s name, address and other personal information to make the call sound official.

– Ask for your credit or debit card numbers over the phone. In its latest of many alerts, the IRS says it will never call (or email) to demand immediate payment or call you about taxes you owe without first having mailed a bill. Some even threaten to arrest you, revoke your license, or even shut down your business if you don’t send them money right away.

– Require that you pay your taxes a certain way.
