A search is under way near Los Angeles harbor for a small plane that reportedly crashed in the ocean.

The U.S. Coast Guard reported that two aircraft were involved in a mid- air collision and that tail identification numbers were recovered from both. The Coast Guard will update the media on its search efforts in a press conference scheduled for approximately 9 p.m.

No survivors have been found, and the number of passengers on board the planes was not immediately available, Anderson said.

The crash site was a quarter-mile south of the Angels Gate light, a lighthouse at the San Pedro Breakwater that is on the National Register of Historic Places. KTLA states that the that the area is “a popular for flight students” and many planes were in the area at the time of the accident.

As darkness fell, about two dozen divers were on call to scour the area but the planes may be at the bottom in up to 30 meters of water, Haskett said.
