Rickie Fowler, Shane Lowry and Hideki Matsuyama finish a weather-disrupted first round at the Phoenix Open with a share of the lead.

He three-putted for bogey on the rowdy hole, missing a 4-footer.

He capped his round with a birdie at the ninth, despite finding a fairway bunker.

“It’s not one that you try and pull off a lot”, he said.

“I love this event, and I definitely embrace the crowd, the atmosphere. It’s a lot of good energy”, he said.

The 34-year-old sunk five more birdies, as well as securing crucial pars on holes 16 and 17, to sit at 10 under. And the reason why I’m here is because of the excitement around this golf tournament.

But Fowler hit three more greens in regulation on Friday, despite saying he felt he swung better Thursday. “It was pretty exciting, and it was nice to do that”.

Four bogeys and a double bogey left Pardraig Harrington languishing on three-over after his 74.

“Obviously, I’m here because of my sponsors and everything”, Watson said.

“Bit of a slip-up on my back nine”, he said.

“I was cluttered and needed to get a more systematic process I can follow”. “That’s something that I need to work on”.

He rebounded with a 26-foot birdie at the seventh to join Fowler atop the leaderboard. “I think it’s a good track because it rewards good shots and it does penalize you if you hit it in the wrong spots like I did find out a couple of times today”. He’s tied for second and tied for fourth in his two previous appearances.

“I know I have been swinging well and playing well”, Fowler said.

Matsuyama was in one of the last groups to finish before play was stopped because of darkness.

Defending champion Brooks Koepka shot a 4-under 67, as did Brandt Snedeker, who was coming off his win Monday at Torrey Pines.

New Zealander Danny Lee has moved to within one shot of the lead in the Phoenix Open in Arizona after carding a five-under 66 for his second round. After playing his first eight holes in 5 under to take the lead, Lefty dropped four strokes in a two-hole stretch and finished with a 69.
