Evangelical United Church of Christ congregation will gather in the sanctuary at 7 p.m. Wednesday for imposition of ashes recalling mortality and how to serve others. During the Middle Ages on the last day before Lent began, in the homes where families planned to fast during the 40 days before Easter, housewives emptied their kitchen pantries of all eggs, flour and butter, etc. So that these staples were not wasted, the women made pancakes – the ideal way to rid their homes from the “fat” in their cupboards before the first day of Lent, Ash Wednesday. Ashes will be distributed at noon and 4 p.m.

Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St., Canfield: Worship is planned at noon and 7 p.m. with Holy Communion and impositio of ashes. Convenient and handicap-accessible parking is available in the church’s Buncombe Street lot.

University United Methodist Church, 3405 Taft: Angel Wings will have a Valentine party for patients of the state hospital at 2 p.m. February 10.

For more information on the pancake evening, the church office can be contacted on 015 516 5165 or Novella on 083 400 6152.

Faith Community Covenant Church, 1919 E. Midlothian Blvd., Youngstown: Service will be at 7 p.m.in the chapel with reflection through song and Scripture and imposition of ashes. Easters date was first acknowledged as a moveable feast at the Council of Nicea in 325 CE, but it took centuries of debate and controversy to settle down, in the so-called “western” churches, to the now familiar calculation: the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox.

ALTON – The Regional Men’s Prayer Breakfast will be held at St. Mary’s Church following the 8 a.m. Mass on Saturday, Feb. 20.

While there is no specific mention of Ash Wednesday in the Bible, the practice of repentance and mourning in sackcloth and ashes is found throughout the Old and New Testaments.

The following lists the Ecumenical Lenten Worship Series services.

The Rev. Tim Barger will visit the Unitarian Universalist Church, 2415 N. Main St., at 10 a.m. Sunday. The service is sponsored by the Red Oak and Wyanet United Methodist Churches, with the Rev. Judy Giese as pastor.
