Danny Lee is in a strong position at the halfway point of the PGA Tour’s latest tournament in Phoenix.
Bubba Watson hits out of a bunker on the 12th hole during the second round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open golf tournament at TPC Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016. So is Rickie Fowler.
Ahead of the round, Watson tried to boring some of the expected poor reaction to his comments with a tweet saying, “I love the @WMPhoenixOpen and fans are awesome… looking forward to today!”
He’s four strokes behind co-leaders Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama and Shane Lowry. Lowry said he plays well on firm greens, which was the case Friday. “The rough is not as high as some of the days out here throughout the year, so with those few things, you can just grip it, hit anywhere you want and try to make as many birdies as you can”. “I made a couple of bad bogeys, but to shoot 65 was nice”.
“It’s good for golf, good for the game, good for the fans that come out here”, Hahn said.
“I don’t like it”, Watson said in response.
Starting on the 10th tee at TPC Scottsdale, Lee had five birdies in his first eight holes, a stretch that had him at the top of the leaderboard. Defending champion McIlroy shot a 72 to finish at 4-under 140 after two rounds.
“I didn’t explain myself well”, Watson said.
Fowler rebounded from a three-putt bogey on the short par-4 17th with the birdie on the par-4 18th.
They were treated to not one but two holes-in-one. The greens being so firm, you’re kind of forced to hit driver. I then had a bit of a slip-up there in the middle of the play. “It’s the tightest hole out there”. The 45-year-old former Arizona State player bogeyed Nos.
