Walker-Kimbrough, USA Take Silver in Pan Am Games – Maryland Terrapins

The Canadian women’s basketball team held off the United States 81-73 Monday night to win the gold medal at the Pan American Games in Toronto.

Williams joins returning All-Americans Jordan Jones and Courtney Walker on the Aggies’ 2015-16 women’s basketball roster, who will begin their quest for an 11th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance in November.

Achonwa did not play in Canada’s Pan Am Games opener while resting her surgically-repaired knee.

More of the same followed in the final as she proved too strong for Venezuelan opponent Alejandra Benitez, withstanding a late fightback to claim a 15-13 victory before admitting how hard it had been to play the two events back to back.

Later Monday, the Canadian women’s basketball team took on the USA for gold.

“I was thinking ‘Oh no, I’d better get it together, ‘” Gleadle said.

Winger won silver with a 61.44-metre toss while Brazil’s Jucilene De Lima took bronze at 60.42.

Among those 2011 medallists was six-foot-four pitcher and 2010 San Diego Padres draft pick Mark Hardy of Campbell River, part of the Canadian team that upset the USA 2-1 in the baseball final at Guadalajara.

Canada was also competing for medals in taekwondo later in the evening.

Canada fashioned a 5-0 won-lost record in Toronto, played before packed crowds of more than 3,000 fans, and learned to deal with the scrutiny and pressure that comes with being the home team at a multi-sport Games. Since the Pan Am games have started, however, Canucks have flocked to their TV screens after an impressive start to the games by their countrymen and women, producing unexpectedly big ratings.

In addition to the gold medal, Nurse acknowledged she left the court with something else: bragging rights when she returns to UConn next season.

– A Canadian swim team that raked in 27 medals including eight gold. Victoria’s Ryan Cochrane and Winnipeg’s Chantal Van Landeghem were double gold medallists and 17-year-old Emily Overholt of West Vancouver, B.C., collected one medal of every colour. She scored in the 79th minute against Ecuador, a blast that helped secure Canada’s superior goal differential that was essential to advancing to the semifinals.

“It’s just about making the ball hit the mesh”, said of what the team needs to do in three months’ time.

“I’ve never seen anything like that in my entire life”, says Blatz, referring to the throwing errors that led to Canada’s last two runs.

The petition calling for Kanye to be dropped from the bill reads: “The Toronto Pan Am games have proven to be very important for Torontonians this year and have triggered a unified sense of pride in our city”.
