Manchester United have opened talks with Jose Mourinho regarding a sensational return to Premier League management, report BBC Sport.
Mourinho reportedly would jump at the chance to replace Louis van Gaal, who would leave two years into his expected three-year tenure, in the dugout at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal, 64, has been under huge pressure since Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea on 17 December, just six months after he won the Blues their first Premier League title for five years.
Mourinho had previously been linked to the Manchester United job when SIr Alex Ferguson, one of his idos, retired from football in 2013.
The England skipper and winger Jesse Lingard put the back-to-back wins over Derby and Stoke down to Van Gaal giving his men greater licence to express themselves.
“And it is especially so with Wayne Rooney, who is saying that because he has scored seven goals”.
United’s squad has been extensively overhauled by Van Gaal since he took over, with 35 players leaving the club and 18 coming in, and he believes it is now much stronger than the one he inherited from David Moyes.
However, an irritated Van Gaal disagreed with his captain and insisted that the upturn in form was down to his philosophy.
In the wake of strained relationship with several players, the Stamford Bridge club started languishing near the relegation zone before Guus Hiddink took over as interim manager.
‘It is not because of the change of attitude of Mr Louis van Gaal or another way of training.
Asked what his past dealings with Hiddink were like, Van Gaal said: “Professional”.
He said: “I have already played Mata in the same role”.
The manager also gave an update on the fitness of sidelined stars and said he thinks Luke Shaw could potentially be ready to feature in the UEFA Europa League final, if United make it through the whole competition-per the club’s website.

“Obviously, having said that, my only goal is to win”.
