Nevada lawmakers tried to address the issue with a law previous year banning anyone convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence from possessing a gun.

Advocates for domestic violence victims in Virginia who’ve long sought to toughen the state’s gun laws are praising a rare compromise in Richmond that could finally shepherd into law a measure that would strip abusers of their gun rights.
Berry also says that while IN law authorizes police to remove firearms they might see while responding to domestic violence or family violence calls, such confiscations rarely happen.
Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics based on data provided by local law enforcement agencies showed that between 2006 and 2014, there were at least 56 gun-related domestic homicides in New Mexico.
But GOP leaders have agreed to get behind the proposal this year in exchange for the reversal of Attorney General Mark Herring’s policy that would have invalidated in Virginia the concealed handgun permits of residents from 25 states.
States, including Wisconsin and SC, have been passing their own laws to match or exceed the federal prohibitions.
“There’s no accountability, and if the person is already a gun owner, there’s just no process for enforcing the law”, Oransky said.
In particular, they argue that people who are subject to temporary protective orders without a hearing to challenge the allegations should not have to give up their guns. The homicides were spread out evenly between the state’s more densely populated south and its vast, rural middle and north. “That would do a heck of a lot more to protect these women”.
In some states, the individual is required to turn them over to law enforcement when subject to a ban.
In announcing executive action on gun control last month, President Barack Obama said protecting domestic abuse victims is one of his goals.
Gun rights advocates say some of the laws are applied too broadly.
The main piece of legislation in Vermont, Act 14, was signed by Gov. Peter Shumlin last spring.
Solicitor Duffie Stone, who prosecutes criminal cases for six Lowcountry counties, said the new law provides prosecutors with another tool that can solve the reporting problems – all cases can be tried in General Sessions court, the highest trial level court with a much better system to track records, instead of by a lower-level magistrate.

There were 93 deaths in Maryland from gun violence in domestic cases during that timeframe, according to the data. “They can fix this bill”, Oransky said.
