SAG Awards Honor Black Actors

Elba is the first person to win two individual awards in one night.

The actor, who was snubbed for an Oscar nomination this year, took home two gongs at the ceremony before taking a swipe at the contraversy.

Supporting acting awards at the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards went to Idris Elba and Alicia Vikander, where Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” again won the award for Best Ensemble in a Television Comedy Series.

The absence of any non-whites in the four Oscar acting categories for the second year running has prompted discussion on diversity in Hollywood. Picking up her second SAG award in a row, Viola spoke openly during her acceptance speech about challenges associated with the character and perception.

“Spotlight“, a film based on the true story of investigative journalism on sexual abuse by Catholic priests, won the top prize of best ensemble cast at the 22nd Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Saturday.

Repeat champs, Idris Elba and Spotlight were the big winners at Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, while Leonardo DiCaprio continued his long march towards Oscar.

Of the five categories that included a diverse group of actors, all five actors of color took the stage to accept an award.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s incredible winning streak continued, as he took home the best male actor in a motion picture, for his performance in “The Revenant“.

Her co-star, Aduba, was the victor for best actress in a TV comedy for her role in the Netflix prison series.

“We must celebrate those awards shows that do celebrate diversity”.

In Room, Larson plays a young mother who is forced to raise her son in a tiny room for years before they escape and then have to adapt to life in the outside world.

Even the night’s Lifetime Achivement Honoree, the legendary Carol Burnett, recalled being told early in her career, “No, no, no – look: all the comedy variety shows are hosted by men”. Also, Kevin Spacey won for male actor in a drama series for his turn as bisexual U.S. President Frank Underwood in House of Cards.
