Super Bowl 50 3rd Quarter Recap: Stalled Drives

The Denver Broncos rode their top-ranked and suffocating defense to a 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers in Sunday’s Super Bowl 50.

On Carolina’s second drive of the game, Cam Newton found Jerricho Cotchery up the seam for what would have been a first down.

Another dominating performance by Von Miller and the Denver defense was more than enough for the Broncos to emerge victorious in Super Bowl 50.

The Broncos capitalized on some big turnovers and got to Cam Newton for seven sacks in the game to give the franchise its first Super Bowl title since the 1998 season with a 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers. He lost two fumbles, threw an interception and failed to produce a touchdown for the only time this season. He recovered a fumble after Miller sacked Newton and forced a fumble.

Q: Did Denver do anything defensively to take away your running lanes? Defensive end Malik Jackson fell on it in the end zone and Denver had a 10-0 lead it would never give up. If you’re in New England, the people around you will be rooting against them very hard.

Denver’s suffocating defense kept Cam Newton jittery all day. Miller had 2 ½ sacks, stripped the ball from Newton twice, one that was recovered for a Broncos touchdown.

Newton, the likely victor of this year’s Most Valuable Player Award, has guided the Panthers to a 17-1 overall record, and despite not having their top receiver, Kelvin Benjamin, for the entire season because of an injury, Carolina has the top-rated offense in all of football.

The Broncos went up 16-7 after a 30-yard field goal from McManus on the team’s first offensive possession of the second half.

The Panthers won the coin flip but opted to defer to the second half, allowing the Broncos to receive the opening kickoff.

Newton carried Auburn on his back to a collegiate national championship, and it appeared he was on his way to leading Carolina to a world title this season. He got the nickname “Riverboat Ron” because he likes to go for it on fourth down a lot.

Squire Barnes: All season long the Denver Broncos have demonstrated the ability to win close games. Considering his four neck surgeries has left his arm like a noodle, that doctors have told him he eventually will need a hip replacement, that he was almost in tears on the eve of the Super Bowl addressing his teammates, it sure feels like it.
