A man who suffered chest pains while taking part in a Krispy Kreme doughnut challenge has died after being rushed to hospital.

The Krispy Kreme Challenge was held for the 12th year on Saturday afternoon in Raleigh. The Krispy Kreme Challenge Facebook page published an update alerting its followers of the situation.

But the annual race turned to tragedy as a 58-year-old man dropped out of the run about 1 mile into the 5 mile race due to chest pains.

“On behalf of the entire N.C. State community, our deepest sympathies go out to the runner’s family members and loved ones”, said Brad Bohlander, a university spokesperson.
