The BBC’s Dan Roan and Simon Stone report that United “have held talks with representatives” of Mourinho, with Van Gaal expected to leave in the summer, a year before his current deal expires.

Van Gaal said: “I think the players have that confidence with them at this moment”.
Mourinho has been out of work since before Christmas, but he has baulked at taking over from Louis van Gaal mid-season, and according to the newspaper, will instead be officially unveiled as Manchester United’s next manager on July 1.
