Box office results: ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ leads on Super Bowl weekend

Kung Fu Panda 3 features the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, James Hong, Randall Duk Kim, Bryan Cranston, J.K. Simmons and Kate Hudson.

“Kung Fu Panda 3” (20th Century Fox) was the No. 1 movie at the weekend box office, taking in about $21 million, for a two-week domestic total of $69.1 million, according to comScore, which compiles ticketing data.

Meanwhile, the Coen brothers’ “Hail, Caesar!” brought in an estimated $4.3 million in its Friday debut in 2,232 theaters.

Grahame-Smith’s “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” also struggled at the box office when it was released in 2012. The movie earned $5.2 million from 2,931 theaters, putting it behind Nicholas Sparks’ film adaptation The Choice, which took in $6.1 million from 2,631 locations.

“It’s all about timing and Kung Fu Panda took advantage of that opening last weekend, with very few options for families at the multiplex in 2016, as far as something brand new”, comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian says.
