Israel has accused Hamas of rebuilding tunnels destroyed during the 2014 war with the aim of launching fresh attacks against it. They are convinced it can only mean one thing: Hamas is tunneling under their homes from Gaza and will one day emerge, guns blazing, to attack or kidnap them.

“I think that is understood in the region, it’s understood in the world”.

The rightwing premier said “I believe that we will see a sobering up on this issue”.

Despite the dangers they experience, Israeli soldiers continue to fulfill their duties to the maximum.

Later in the day, an attempted car-ramming occurred at a military checkpoint in the West Bank north of Jerusalem, with the attacker shot and taken to hospital for treatment, Israel’s military said.

More than 2,200 Palestinians, including 1,462 civilians, were killed during the fighting. Last week, several Hamas tunnel-diggers were killed in Gaza when a tunnel under construction collapsed due to rain.

The Hamas leader said that militant groups were preparing for the next round of fighting with Israel “both above ground and underneath”.

“The working assumption in the IDF is that Hamas has tunnels that begin deep in Gaza and reach into Israeli territory”.

PA security officers carried Sukkari’s body, which was draped in a Palestinian flag, from the Rafidiyeh Hospital in Nablus toward the city center, where hundreds of mourners were gathered.

“The United States and the European Union – Israel’s closest allies – also have had unusually stern criticism of Israel in recent weeks, reflecting their frustrations with Netanyahu’s right-wing government”.

In the latest violence Monday, the military said a Palestinian attempting to cross the West Bank separation barrier drew a knife when soldiers approached him.

Some 26 Israelis, as well as an American student, have been killed in near-daily Palestinian attacks, mainly stabbings. So, too, are the incitement of violence and the glorification of killers. The rest died in clashes.

“I will always stand up to those who challenge Israel’s right to exist”, Ban said in the Times, “just as I will always defend the right of Palestinians to have a state of their own”.

“Palestinians – especially young people – are losing hope over what seems a harsh, humiliating and endless occupation”, the United Nations chief wrote.

Military engineers unearthed and destroyed 32 tunnels, Israeli officials say, and have since, with USA help, been developing a half-dozen technologies for detecting digs along the sandy, 65-km (40 mile) frontier with Gaza.

At his weekly Cabinet meeting Sunday, Netanyahu said such a move by the French “will be an incentive for the Palestinians to come and not compromise”.
