Marking the first major US-China animation co-production, the DreamWorks Animation/Oriental DreamWorks film has been released in two language versions on 15,000 screens, nearly half of the country’s total number.
“Kung Fu Panda 3 definitely feels like the end of a trilogy and wraps up the dragon warrior’s story in a complete and satisfying way”, IGN’s Max Nicholson said. It finished the weekend with $12.4 million at 3,330 sites for a decline of only 22% and has now generated an impressive $138.2 million domestically.
The latest animated film “Kung Fu Panda 3” hit China’s theaters on Friday as it has taken in 107 million Renminbi, or 16.1 million USA dollars, on its official opening day.
This time out, Po (Black) reunites with his biological father (Cranston) and travels with him to join other pandas at a secret sanctuary, where he’s arranged to be married to Mei Mei (Hudson). The family film cost around $145 million to produce.
Disney’s launch of Coast Guard rescue adventure “The Finest Hours” saw only modest returns with $10.3 million at 3,143 sites – trailing both “The Revenant” and the seventh weekend of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. The film stars the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen and Dustin Hoffman. Walt Disney Co.’s DIS, +2.45% “The Finest Hours“, starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck, cracked the top five earning films of the weekend, garnering $10.3 million on a reported budget of about $80 million. Analysts believed that the Marlon Wayans-led “Fifty Shades of Grey” spoof would bring in anywhere between $10 million and $15 million. Leonardo DiCaprio’s chronicle has also reached $274 million worldwide.
