Jonas Edwards, a tourist from North Carolina, was wearing a long rope of large shiny beads in the distinctive purple, green and gold colors that are synonymous with the holiday.

“Mardi Gras is just one big party”, Reeves said bouncing Charlie on her shoulders to carnival music playing nearby.

WDSU-TV (http://bit.ly/1QS7yP2 ) reports the incident began Monday night at Oakwood Mall after three people reported that an unidentified man had brandished a gun toward them. One especially prized “throw” are the coconuts given out by members of Zulu. Their parade dates back to roughly 1910, and is followed by the Rex Organization’s parade, which dates back to 1872.

“We’re from Ville Platte, so we do the old time Mardi Gras, too – we chase the chickens”, O’Conner said. Joining Rex as one of the monarchs of all Carnival, King Zulu won his campaign and is ready to be crowned and burst onto the streets with the Mayor, Witch Doctor, Big Shot and other characters. “Kolston Santos honestly responded, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about'”.

She has been bringing her grandchildren since they were 2 years old, O’Conner said, adding that King Gabriel’s Parade, which ran in the morning, was her favorite Lafayette parade.

Mardi Gras is a rite of passage for many in Louisiana.

Mardi Gras colors cover the cake in purple, green and gold.

Riders on the floats, who generally wear masks, throw beads or other specially made trinkets to people along the parade route. The members wear costumes resembling skeletons with paper mache masks covering their heads.

Dabne Whitemore came to the door in her white bathrobe after hearing the gang and their drums coming from down the street.

After Rex comes two truck parades, also along St. Charles Ave. and that marks the end of the major parades in the city until next year.
