LG confirms Always ON feature for LG G5, still teasing us

The GIF above (LG really likes GIFs suddenly) gives us a glimpse of the device’s silhouette and the apparent always-on display. It could be on the way for the Galaxy S7, according to a new patent.

The LG G5 is set to be revealed at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month, so until then we’re not likely to get definitive answers.

LG’s chosen date is a bold statement for the company, as Samsung will also be unveiling its next flagship device, the Galaxy S7, on that day. In LG’s case, it appears the company is preparing to use it as a feature to constantly show the time as well as displaying a small app icon for any missed notifications.

Recently, LG posted a teaser on their Facebook page which hints that LG G5 will come with always on display when it launches. That’s not a major departure from what Motorola has done with active notifications on phones since 2013’s Moto X, but it does suggest that LG could switch to a new screen technology for the G5.

From what we’re being told, the LG G5 Always On display is actually a full-screen version of the V10’s second screen, rather than an AMOLED display. LG didn’t go into detail about how this screen feature would work.

The GIF does seem to show a fairly standard layout for the Always On Display, so there may be constraints on what can be put there. It will indeed be something to look forward to in LG’s unveiling of the LG G5, as it is interesting to find out how LG would handle the load on the smartphone’s battery due to the feature.
