Health officials are investigating whether there is a link between Zika infections in pregnant women and a rare birth defect called microcephaly, in which babies are born with abnormally small heads.
The commission said the chances of the virus spreading in China were “extremely low” due to cold winter temperatures and a lack of mosquito activity, the primary avenue by which Zika is transmitted.
A PREGNANT woman has become the third Queenslander to test positive for Zika virus this year. From 2013 until early 2014, researchers estimate almost 20,000 people on the cluster of islands in the South Pacific were infected with the virus.
“For women who are thinking about becoming pregnant here, there is not anything specific to be concerned about, unless their partner has recently traveled to an area that has Zika virus”, said Hanrahan, medical director of infectious diseases at MetroHealth.
This is the third confirmed case of Zika virus in Dallas county. Others may have mild fevers, rashes, joint and muscle pains or headaches that last from several days to a week, but “hospitalization is uncommon”. In May 2015, Zika virus was found for the first time in the Western Hemisphere in northeastern Brazil. It’s possible a different type of mosquito found in the state might transmit the virus, the health department said.
Jannelle Couret, who studies mosquitoes, said in a new release Tuesday that Zika isn’t a major threat to Rhode Island.

During the meeting, the White House summary said, Obama emphasized the need to accelerate research efforts to make better diagnostic tests available, to develop vaccines and therapeutics, and to make sure that all Americans have information about Zika virus and steps they can take to protect themselves from infection.
