Recall Alert: more Hondas affected by defective airbags

Federal auto-safety regulators said in late January that they expected to add an additional 5 million vehicles of several automakers Takata air bag recalls, in part because they had identified a tenth death attributable to defective inflators.

The recall by the American Honda Motor Co. was posted Wednesday on a consumer vehicle safety website run by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and includes older models dating back to 2005 but also some as recent as 2016.

A United Kingdom spokesman said the models affected in Europe include; CR-V (2007-2011 MY), CR-Z (2011-2015 MY), Jazz (2009-2014 MY) and Insight (2010-2014 MY) and some could be in Britain.

Honda said it received reports of two injuries linked to the flaw. A list of specific vehicle identification numbers (VIN) included in the recall has yet to be determined, and a VIN search at Honda or Acura websites or the NTHSA recall site is not yet possible.

The Takata airbag debacle is still underway, but when it rains, it pours.

A new SRS control unit will be installed in affected vehicles, free of charge.

The larger problem involves a wide range of Honda products equipped with faulty Takata airbags. Once this happens, corrosion buildup causes a power failure and the airbags don’t deploy in a crash, or they could randomly deploy when the vehicle hasn’t been in an accident.

It recalled another 269,000 similar models in Canada on Monday for the same issue.

Auto makers in the USA are recalling more than 24 million vehicles with Takata air bags, which can explode and spray shrapnel.

Honda will voluntarily recall 23,343 units of 2008-2010 model-year Honda Accord Sedans in Canada to replace the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) control unit.

Owners will get an initial recall letter, plus a second notification once parts become available.

“We are working closely with all potentially impacted vehicle manufacturers on this issue”, said Continental spokesperson, Mary Arraf. Although Toyota has been impacted from the air bag crisis as well, Honda is still the most affected by its defects.

On Thursday, Fiat Chrysler announced the recall of 112,000 vehicles including the 2009 Dodge Journey, the 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, and Chrysler Town & Country minivans, and the 2009 Volkswagen Routan minivan, made by FCA, due to the same fault.

A fault has been found in computer components that control up to 5 million airbags in vehicles worldwide
