An investigation was launched into the circumstances of the accident in the coastal town of Rochefort, Mayor Herve Blanche told French broadcaster iTele.

Officials for the Charente-Maritime department used Twitter to confirm the deaths of six people.

The bus was carrying about 17 people, and three children suffered minor injuries in the accident, a police source said. “This is such a tragedy”, Servolle said, referring to the incident.

He also said six children had been killed.

AFP reported that a crash involving another school bus in France had left two children dead the previous day.

The other students were transported to a place near the scene of the crash where psychological assistance is available.
