His speech was light on immigration and foreign policy, although he mentioned the so-called Islamic State, the recent shootings in Chattanooga and other threats.

Kasich, a Republican, took about 15 minutes before declaring his intention to run for the job though it’s been known for months that he was going to seek his party’s nomination. Empathy, he said, is critical to governing.

“We’re going to compete in every state, ” Weaver said in an interview before Kasich’s announcement in Columbus.

Kasich’s path to the nomination is narrow, but he has the credibility to contend if he can find traction in a crowded field. As the Ohio governor made his pitch, Trump garnered a large crowd in South Carolina, where he made news by insulting Sen. He cited his extensive experience on the Armed Services Committee, where he worked to cut wasteful spending.

“Some people just don’t have the fortune that many of us have and they struggle”, he said.

When asked at a Koch Brothers-sponsored conference past year why he was one of the few Republican governors to expand Medicaid, he responded, as mentioned by a Politico article titled “John Kasich’s Anger Management”, “I don’t know about you, lady”.

He added that fiscal responsibility is not about numbers.

Kasich is popular in Ohio. He has signed state laws restricting abortion rights in Ohio.

Polls showed Kasich’s approval rating plummet amid that fight with big labor.

Ohio State legend Archie Griffin was a surprise guest during Kasich’s announcement.

The politically combative Kasich is at odds with the party’s dominant conservative wing on a few issues.

But Kasich, the 16th Republican to announce a campaign, will face questions from conservatives over his positions on health care, guns, immigration and education.

“When you’ve been able to have success in the state and be re-elected overwhelmingly, clearly, that puts him in a very small tier of potential candidates who could be the nominee or be on the ticket”, Hottinger said. You’re the working poor?

“It’s the challenges that make you better”.

Kasich also released his campaign logo.

Mr Kasich has spent the last year touring the country but is at the bottom of polls of the Republican contenders.
