Memon was the only one of 11 people convicted for the 1993 attacks to have his death sentence upheld on appeal. He is now in the Nagpur Central jail, which has facilities for hanging.

By filing a curative petition, Memon was seeking a on his execution. “He occasionally lost his temper in the court during the hearings”, alleged Nikam.

The curative petition was the last legal recourse available for Memon. Dattu, Justice TS.Thakur and Justice Anil R Dave said that “none of the grounds stated in the curative petition would fall within the parameters” involving the violation of the principle of natural justice and apprehension of bias.

The entire family, including Yakub Memon, quietly fled Mumbai shortly before the blasts.

In April, the apex court dismissed his review plea, making the way clear for his execution.

“It is absolutely imperative for people like Yakub Memon to be hanged to death because 1993 blasts victims know the kind of anxiety they have had to deal with”, said Shain N.C., a spokeswoman for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Mumbai told reporters.

“Lawmakers find it easy to use death penalty as symbol of their resolve to tackle crime & choose to ignore effective solutions”. Memon’s review petition was heard by a three-judge bench in an open court in pursuance of a Constitution bench verdict that the practice of deciding review pleas in chambers be done away with, in cases where death penalty has been awarded. “A noted counsel had said that the prosecution obtained a treasure trove of information (from him)”, Azmi said, recalling that Yakub had returned of his own volition to surrender before the Indian authorities.

He was awarded the death sentence by a Special TADA Court in Mumbai on July 27, 2007, for his role in the blasts, including arranging finances for carrying out the 13 serial explosions which left 257 dead and over 700 injured across the city on March 12, 1993. A special anti-terrorism court had convicted 100 people in the attacks.
