Woodstock was held August 15-18, 1969, in rural Bethel in Sullivan County, New York. There have been two other Woodstock anniversary festivals in the past, which ran into problems with rioting, fires, and police lines.

Original Woodstock architect Michael Lang has plans to put on a 50th anniversary festival, presumably in 2019. Details regarding potential lineups have yet to be revealed.

He also noted that, in light of the current festival culture boom, there could be an annual Woodstock event following the 50th anniversary celebration.

“Speaking about how the time is right, Lang added: “[Woodstock] is the original and most famous festival brand”. In all likelihood, the property that belonged to farmer Max Yasgur that was the location for the 1969 festival will no longer be suitable as it is now the site for the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Lang had attempted to organize a 40th anniversary concert in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, but as Stereogum reports, that idea never materialized.

But let’s quickly talk about Woodstock ’99 because perhaps enough time has passed, allowing the pit stains and stench of that version of the festival to fade into the rearview mirror.
