Certain airbags manufactured by Continental can fail in as many as five million cars from at least four manufacturers, according to filings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

An airbag recall by Continental Automotive Systems is now believed to affect some 5m vehicles worldwide, writes Brian Byrne.

Continental Automotive Systems said that 5 million cars worldwide are fitted with potentially faulty air bags.

Honda has previously recalled more than 6 million vehicles in the United States since 2008 to replace Takata inflators that could rupture.

The Continental recall comes on the heels of widening recalls of rupture-prone Takata air bags linked to almost a dozen deaths globally. Continental says it is notifying the manufacturers, which each will issue individual recalls.

Honda’s action indicates the continuing Takata recalls may not be over. Then in 2011, Mercedes and Fiat Chrysler reported inadvertent airbag deployments, while a year ago, Honda reported two airbag non-deployments in 2008 Honda Accords.

Fewer than 2 million vehicles in the USA are affected, said Continental, a division of Germany-based Continental AG.

NHTSA opened an investigation in August after receiving 19 reports of failed airbag control modules in the 2008 Accord.

What’s your biggest asset in a auto accident has turned into a deadly recall. According to the Associated Press report, Honda is recalling 364,787 2008-2010 Accords, but parts won’t be available to fix the problem until the fall. We will update this story as soon as we know more.

Honda spokesman Chris Martin confirmed the dealer memo as well as the stop-sale order, which he said is Honda’s protocol with any recall that involves cars likely to be among dealer’s new or certified pre-owned inventory. Moisture has caused the chemical propellant that ignites the airbag inflators – ammonium nitrate – to be damaged by moisture over time. The recall is to replace potentially faulty air bags from Japanese component maker Takata. Despite an aggressive campaign, Honda brand boss Jeff Conrad told TheDetroitBureau.com that only about 50 percent of the vehicles Honda had targeted prior to this week’s recall have so far been repaired.
