Although not all of its unit are affected, according to The Verge, Apple has made its announcement that it will be replacing all USB-C cables which were sold between April to June 8last year. In fact the means of telling apart an earlier, potentially faulty cable from a newer cable is the presence of a serial number, as newer cables have a serial number stamped on.

According to Apple, affected cables have “Designed by Apple in California”.

For those who haven’t, they can directly communicate with Apple through Apple customer support or visit an Apple Store or an Apple Certified Service Provider to have their cables replaced. We take you through steps on how to get a replacement.

The 12-inch MacBook with a Retina display was launched in March 2015 and it’s been a widely popular Apple product, with die-hard fans even hurrying to sell their old MacBooks in order to buy the new model.

The company notes that the free replacement cable opportunity isn’t limited exclusively to those that shipped with the MacBook, and that if you bought a USB-C charger as a standalone accessory, you could be eligible for a replacement as well.

The replacement process, which other eligible MacBook owners need to follow to get the new USB-C charge cable, requires them to provide some information.

Some USB-C cables have gained a reputation for being unreliable. The failed cables aren’t being cited as a safety issue – and hence there’s no recall – but rather Apple appears to be replacing them due to their unreliability. We will need your MacBook serial number to verify eligibility for this program.
