George Shaw, an Everton fan with cerebral palsy, told 5 live’s Eleanor Oldroyd it was a “dream come true” to win the club’s Goal of the Month competition.

“Everything started in George’s head and that is what impresses me the most”, said Martinez, who presented the nine-year-old with his award at the club’s Finch Farm training complex on Thursday morning.

“Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me”.

Everton have now invited George to an awards evening in May. “I never thought I would get a trophy, so it’s just brilliant to have something to be able to show people”.

George had been practising with his father Dave on a park near a home but admitted to match-day nerves as he took to the Goodison Park pitch.

As such, he has now also earned an invite to Everton’s glitzy end-of-season awards bash in May. Everyone has just been unbelievable, supporting me and voting for me, it’s just been brilliant really.

‘He showed there is never a reason or excuse to give up your dream.

After meeting Roberto, George was introduced to Barkley, Lennon and Mirallas, who presented him with a framed winners’ certificate and a football signed by the entire first-team squad.

George winning the poll and the hearts of fans, the manager says, has taught the Club a real life lesson.

“I went in, sat down and Roberto came in and said he would like me to come to the front to give me the award”.
