The New England Journal of Medicine has published a study of a 25-year-old European woman infected with Zika in Brazil while pregnant last year which it says demonstrates the link between Zika and microcephaly. His temperature is now normal and a skin rash is receding, it said.

Ms Hennessy said there was no risk to the public as the Zika virus was not transmitted person to person, and was not present in Australian mosquitoes.

Full-fledged availability of a vaccine against the mosquito-borne virus would take longer, the Minister warned.

Forty-million Americans travel from the U.S.to Zika-affected areas every year, officials say. The type of mosquito that carries the virus only lives in the far northeast corner of the country, which is sparsely populated.

Yolo County had been sending out health alerts to local providers telling them what to screen for and when to get the county involved if they’re concerned about symptoms and travel history.

Another pregnant woman tested positive for the virus in south-east Queensland earlier this week.

A Maryland resident was diagnosed with the Zika virus after traveling to an affected country.

The World Health Organization advised that the recent cluster of microcephaly cases and other neurologic disorders reported in Brazil constitutes a public health emergency of global concern.

She did not disclose which country the woman had travelled to, saying that protecting her privacy was paramount.

The Zika virus has caused birth defects and miscarriages in Latin America and the Caribbean, officials said.

“We will undoubtedly see many travelers returning to the USA with Zika”, Frieden said.

More than four dozen cases of Zika have been reported in the US, according to the Washington Post.
