Zika Virus Detected In Yolo County Resident
An outbreak of the disease in Brazil led to an alert by the Pan American Health Organization last May. Residents who have travelled to an area with Zika infection should contact their personal healthcare provider who will work with the Putnam County Department of Health to facilitate the proper testing procedure through the state Department of Health laboratory at Wadsworth Center.

There have been three confirmed Zika cases in IL, and all three people have been treated by their doctors.
Still, several countries where Zika is widespread have taken the very unusual step of advising women not to get pregnant.
It was unclear whether the two miscarriages were counted among the six cases involving pregnant women.
In an update Thursday from the Florida Department of Health, a total of 18 cases are reported statewide. But there is mounting evidence from Brazil suggesting infection in pregnant women is linked to abnormally small heads in their babies – a birth defect called microcephaly.
Discovered in Uganda in 1947, the current outbreak of Zika virus in Brazil began in early 2015 and has spread to over 20 other countries in the Americas, including Mexico and Puerto Rico. The funding would go toward things such as developing a vaccine against Zika and mosquito surveillance and control.
The state of Maryland has its first confirmed case of the Zika virus.
A blood test confirmed that the patient had Zika.
“We are focusing on pregnant women and women in the reproductive age range who may become pregnant”, Dr. Miller said. Usually, an infection brings only with flu-like symptoms that last no more than a week. Those thought to have been infected could then have ultrasound scans to monitor their fetus’ development.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health relayed the positive test to Lehigh, Vice-Provost for Student Affairs John Smeaton said in the email to the campus community. “We are working with the medical community to identify high-risk individuals”. Zika is associated with a severe birth defect. “Our team hasn’t said we’re not going unless this happens”. Sexual transmission of Zika virus from infected women to their sex partners has not been reported.
