Police detain 7 more students in JNU row

Hours after Singh and Human Resource and Development Minister Smriti Irani denounced the elevating of alleged anti-India slogans within the JNU, the Delhi Police had yesterday arrested the Kanhaiya Kumar, on costs of sedition and legal conspiracy. He assured that no action would be taken against any person who is not guilty. Later in the day, Bassi tweeted, “As regards DP (Delhi Police), kindly have no doubts”.

After the arrest, the varsity students and teachers protested outside the Vice Chancellor’s office demanding the administration’s intervention into the manner in which students are being compared to “terrorists” and picked up from campus by policemen in plain clothes during alleged raids. Kanhaiya told the court that he was neither shouting any slogan nor saying anything against integrity of the country and said he had rushed to the spot only to prevent a clash between ABVP workers and students organising the event. Has he been spotted in any picture or video?

“Considering the seriousness of the incidents, and in order to enable a fair enquiry, the committee has debarred the eight students from academic activities with immediate effect during the pendency of the enquiry”.

The JNU administration tried to distance itself from the issue as it barred entry of outsiders inside the campus.

Now that Kanhaiya Kumar is behind bars, BJP and ABVP have created a stronger bene noir to face in their next elections.

The V-C also appealed to the students “to go beyond this incident and help the campus return to normalcy”. The university also called it an act of indiscipline and said that an inquiry by proctor will also be done.

The statement further mentioned: “We condemn the divisive slogans (Bharat ke tukde honge hazar) that were raised by some people on that day”.

The police, however, said, “No one can enter the premises without their (students) permission”.

The Minister of Home Affairs has warned of stern action against all those involved. Singh’s word pushed the Press Club of India also to file a complaint against a group of Delhi University professors, including Parliament attack accused S A R Geelani for organising a seminar on its premises to honour Guru.

Addressing those students, Gandhi said: “People who showed black flag on my face, I feel proud that in my country they have the right to show black flag”.

Kumar’s arrest evoked strong reactions from JNU students and teachers, past and present, and Opposition parties even as the RSS’s students wing ABVP “thanked” police for arresting the “anti-nationals”.

He has been charged with sedition and conspiracy for allegedly indulging in anti-India activities. “No question of harassment of students. There is a need to seriously think why such wrong tendencies are breeding in such an institution”, she said. It said its members “hold no brief for those who raised objectionable slogans”. Take action according to law against them.
