Bundle up if you’re heading outside this weekend because it’s going to be really, really cold.

In total, the agency issued warnings for 140 regions of Canada, Environment Canada senior climatologist Dave Phillips told CTV’s News Channel on Saturday morning.

Members of the public are encouraged to dress appropriately for the cold weather by wearing layers of clothing and warm socks, gloves, hats and a scarf.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when cold temperatures or the wind chill creates an “elevated risk” to health, including frostbite and hypothermia.

Southern Manitoba is facing wind chill temperatures nearing -40, while northern Manitoba will be as cold as -50 with windchill.

In Toronto, this weekend is expected to be one of the coldest so far this winter.

– Always wear clothing appropriate for the weather. Be sure to cover your nose to protect it. – If you get wet, change into dry clothing as soon as possible. You lose heat faster when you’re wet. In Toronto, those alerts, issued by the City of Toronto bring into effect specific protocols for opening warming centres, and requirements for property owners and managers to follow. “Basically this cold air would be colder if the lakes were frozen”.

They say the wind chill could make Friday evening feel as cold as -35 C. “That could freeze flesh in a matter of minutes”.

It's really cold out there and it's only going to get worse
