Van Gaal: Europa League now a priority for Manchester United

Louis van Gaal says he is not going to directly ask if Man United have been speaking to Jose Mourinho.

United went into Saturday’s lunchtime clash knowing three points were a must if they wanted to keep their hunt for Champions league qualification alive.

United suffered four straight losses and bowed out of the Champions League group stages before a slight revival occured in the new year, but a 1-0 home loss to Southampton in January cast fresh doubt on Van Gaal’s position. If you find out whether it’s true, then you know where your fate lies.

Louis van Gaal has insisted that the “real” Manchester United supporters are behind under-fire winger Memphis Depay.

He said:”When you play a lot of matches, which is what will happen in February and also in March, yes it makes it more hard”.

When asked if he thought the stories were invented from nothing, he answered “yes”. I not only have a strong relationship with Ed, but also with (club owners) the Glazers.

United were behind after just two minutes in Saturday’s early kick-off when Wahbi Khazri’s in-swinging free kick bounced through a crowd of players and into the far corner of the net. That is not enough as we have to improve our results and consistency to win a lot of matches in a row.

Meanwhile, the race for the title resumes on Sunday with three more games, as leaders Leicester City take on Arsenal in the pick of the weekend games for Week 26.

Van Gaal continued to say “what Scholes is thinking, he has to think it. Every human being can give his opinion”. Today it was very disappointing because we needed to win this game because of the big gap between the top four.

“It was great character from the boys but we also did it against Manchester City when our second-half performance was fantastic”, he told safc.com.

Van Gaal, who has spent $375 million in his 1½-year tenure, finished the game with 21-year-old Premier League debutant Donald Love and striker Will Keane – making his second Premier League appearance and first since the 2010-11 season – in the team.

“Compared with the Premier League and FA Cup [United play third-tier strugglers Shrewsbury next week for a quarter-final place] it is third in our priorities”, he said.
