Greater Boston prepares for weekend’s Arctic weather

Warming centers have been opened across the I-95 corridor to help anyone get indoors and away from the brutal cold. According to the NWS, the wind chill will reach risky levels.

Saturday night into Sunday morning is the coldest spot in the forecast.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory from 1 p.m. Saturday until mid-afternoon Sunday.

A major cold blast is hitting the Northeast and Midwest today and forcing almost 100 million people to deal with unsafe and possibly life-threatening wind chills.

While the wind chills are expected to ease by late Sunday morning, the next patch of rough weather is expected Monday, with snow and sleet likely.

Additionally, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for La Porte County in IN and Berrien County in MI until 3 p.m. Saturday, where up to six inches of lake effect snow is possible.

Mayor de Blasio also issued a city wide advisory to all property owners, construction sites and crane operators to take precautions; all crane operations were stopped on Saturday because of the high winds. Highs will be around 15. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. Most of the region will stay partly cloudy with temperatures in the upper 20s. Lows near or below zero.

Patchy blowing snow will continue Friday evening, with northwest winds from 15 to 20 miles per hour and gusts up to 30 miles per hour.

Saturday: Snow showers. High near 14. Boston is headed lower, Nocera said: minus 4.

Tuesday: Snow likely before 11am, then rain and snow likely. Highs on Tuesday into Wednesday will be in the 50s. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

The area should expect a coating to an inch of snow, the weather service said.
