Rupp, Cragg win marathon trial, earn spot on US Olympic Team
Lt. Gina Slaby will be among the 259 women and 217 men who have qualified for the Olympic Marathon Trials in Los Angeles. She was the top American finisher at in her last two marathons – NY in 2014, and Boston last spring after recovering from a stress fracture in her femur.

“So we did 4 by 3 mile at goal marathon pace, which is around 5:08 per mile, and we took 2 to 3 minute rests between the intervals”, he said.
“I never envisioned this”, Greenwood said.
Cragg, 32, waited for Flanagan at the finish line, holding an American flag, hugging Flanagan and then, suddenly, keeping the 2008 Olympic 10,000m bronze medalist from falling onto the pavement. “I had only six weeks to train once off crutches”.
Kaulen, of Hilliard, was a three-time qualifier for the Division I state track and field meet from 1992-94 at Garfield Heights High School in suburban Cleveland.
“I had a hard time deciding if I should pursue qualifying for the Olympic trials”, she said.
The top three finishers earn an Olympic spot.
“I didn’t have Internet”, she said.
Kara Goucher, who has trained with the both the Oregon Project and the Bowerman Track Club but now lives in Colorado, was fourth.
Slaby estimates that in the past six years, under the tutelage of Felty, she has logged 18,211 miles.
“I need to trust my instincts out there”, he said.
“It would have been very interesting to see if she made a decision to keep running the 1500 after college”, said Cley Twigg, Greenwood’s coach. She also furnished information in a BBC documentary.
“She is a mental giant”. After returning from deployment to Iraq (June 2014 to March 2015) where he served as a financial management technician, Kibet started training for his first marathon. “In addition, her ability to handle the heavy workload it takes to be a nationally-ranked runner is outstanding”. She doesn’t describe herself as a competitive person, as least with other runners. “I love my team (CED), the training but my career has to come first”, Herndon said.
She says she spent a lot of time outside with her five siblings. She’ll have two full days to prepare before the marathon on Saturday. Baillie was running with the leaders in the race’s early stages. I don’t know… I think that the double in Rio is certainly possible.
Slaby qualified for the Pan AM Games Cross Country championship to be held in Venezuela in March by winning the Armed Forces Cross Country Championship and finishing seventh at the national cross country championship held in Bend. Most recently he has excelled in the ultra marathon world, establishing himself as one of the best ultra runners in the nation. That’s how to become a successful marathon runner: “It’s training your mind to be able to handle that amount of work at a time”.
Blackham recalled sitting in her hotel room the night before the Chicago Marathon, overcome with nerves.
She ran the last 13.1 miles nearly 10 minutes faster than the first, a huge split for a first-time marathoner.

“I knew I would have to go out conservatively because of the heat”, Rupp said. She crossed the finish line for third place and the last spot on the U.S. Olympic team, then dropped to her knees and was carried to a wheelchair.
