The statement added that Congress “condemned the raising of anti-India slogans by a handful of persons on JNU campus on 9th February and had demanded strict action against them”.

The raging JNU row on Saturday turned into an ideological battle between the BJP and its Left opponents, with Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi lending them support and comparing the Modi government with Hitler’s regime. Why is the Modi Government hell-bent on locking up and demolishing a great institution which is an accumulation of liberal thought process and democracy?

The JNU Students Union (JNUSU) soon issued a statement condemning the attack, and alleged that it was an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activist who assaulted the former union minister.

“People who suppress the voice of this institute are anti-national. Rohith Vemula was branded as an anti-national”, Surjewala said. He asked the students not to allow the BJP government and the RSS lackeys to muzzle the voice of dissent.

Lashing out at Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s ex-OSD Jawahar Yadav for tweeting that “prostitutes were better than the female protestors at JNU”, the Congress leader asserted that this was a clear example of the ministers under the Centre. These people feel that the only voice in the public discourse should be their voice.

JNU students union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested today in this connection after a case of sedition and criminal conspiracy was lodged into the matter. “We are waiting for a formal complaint from the leader to take necessary action into the matter”, said a police officer.

Gandhi, who was shown black flags during his visit to the JNU campus, said anti-India sentiments are unquestionably unacceptable.

As controversy surrounding crackdown on students assumed bigger political proportions with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi closing ranks with leaders of Left, JDU, RJD and AAP to attack Modi government, the BJP hit back accusing him of supporting “anti-national” forces and speaking the voice of LeT founder and terrorist Hafiz Sayeed.
