Both officers were shot and rushed to the hospital.
The officers were taken to a local hospital and are in stable condition, Chief of Police Carl Dabadie Jr. said.
Baton Rouge police haven’t released the shooter’s identity, but Gina Chambers, who said she is godsister to the shooter, identified him as 22-year-old Calvin Smith.
Police say the suspect led the officers on a 2-mile vehicle chase early Saturday, then exited his vehicle with a rifle and fired at them.
Smith was shot Saturday after police say he shot two Baton Rouge Police officers after a vehicle chase that ended on Fairfields Avenue.
Both of the of the officers were shot but managed to return fire, hitting Smith. The race of the suspect was not immediately available.
“One more inch and an officer is dead”, said Moore.
Chambers said she does not know where Smith obtained the rifle.
Moore said he studied footage captured via squad auto dashboard cameras that appeared to show the officers being attacked by Smith.
A Baton Rouge woman says the man accused of sparking a gun battle with police was hospitalized in Shreveport several months ago after a suicide attempt.
According to District Attorney Hillar Moore, the officer was wearing a bullet proof vest but was hit on the side where the vest comes together, traveled down and entered his body.
Terrell Starwood, who was staying at a friend’s house that was close to the scene when he heard sirens, followed by a barrage of gunfire. Police units lined the area where the shooting took place, and dozens of markers were placed to flag the location of shell casings and other evidence.
