VW recalls 680000 vehicles with suspect air bag inflators

On Wednesday, Volkswagen said it would recall 850,000 vehicles and BMW said it would recall 840,000 vehicles. They are linked to nine deaths in the US and more than 100 injuries. You might have better luck with the agency’s VIN lookup tool, which should confirm whether your specific vehicle is affected by the Takata recall – or any other recall, for that matter.

The announcement on Tuesday revealed that Daimler will be recalling about 705,000 Mercedes-Benz cars and about 136,000 Daimler vans, according to Reuters. The German automaker says net profit for fiscal 2015 will now be $8.1 billion, instead of $9.7 billion, due to the recall. Since 2008, about 24 million US vehicles have been recalled due to the inflators, with about 50 million recalled worldwide.

The vehicles to be recalled have Takata-made air bag inflators that the Japanese supplier declared defective last month, affecting 5.1 million vehicles in the United States.

On Jan. 22, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it had added 5 million airbag inflators to the growing list of Takata-related recalls. Based on this information, Volkswagen Group has chose to recall approximately 840,000 Volkswagen Group vehicles, including approximately 170,000 Audi vehicles, in the U.S.

This is the latest batch of safety recalls over faulty and in ten cases deadly airbags with exploding inflators.

Volkswagen didn’t specifiy which vehicles were affected, saying the owners would be notified by mail.

The recall covers certain 2006 to 2010 VW Passat sedans and wagons made in Germany, as well as some U.S.-made Passats from 2012 to 2014.

In November U.S. regulators fined Takata $70 million and it is still under investigation by the Justice Department.
