Rooney, Martial set sights on fragile Sunderland

With the sides above them all playing each other in a mouth-watering Sunday programme, United could have closed to within three points of fourth-placed Manchester City but the gloom that has enveloped them most of the season returned as their hopes of Champions League qualification receded.

“It’s a terrific ask from these new players to produce that type of performance after arriving in January, they’re on their knees in there because they’re not used to the pace of the game here, it’s extremely quick and much quicker than where they’ve come from”.

The good news for United fans is that the team are beginning to gel and display decent attacking form, with Rooney and Lingard in particular getting amongst the goals.

A delighted Sam Allardyce speaks to safc.com following Sunderland’s 2-1 win over Manchester United.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is hoping on ending the season with a title.

West Brom had not won any of their previous five league games before Saturday’s smash-and-grab on Merseyside and were struggling badly to find the back of the net as they began to slide down the table.

John O’Shea believes his old club Manchester United have lost their air of invincibility after helping Sunderland beat them on Saturday. “Hopefully that trend will continue and he’ll get better and better”.

“Billy has got a lot of experience and we’ve got DeAndre, who has got very little experience at this level”, Allardyce told The Independent.

Newcastle were thumped 5-1 at Chelsea in the late kickoff as the champions produced their best performance of a poor league season to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to 12 since Guus Hiddink replaced sacked Jose Mourinho.
