Leonardo DiCaprio, ‘The Revenant’ win big at the British Academy Film Awards

Leonardo DiCaprio finally shook off his bridesmaid status – he’s been nominated for lead actor four times – and won his first acting Bafta.

He said: ‘I remember watching Tom Courtenay in The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner, all the way to Gary Oldman in State Of Grace, to the late Peter O’Toole’. “I could not have done this journey without you”. “I would not be standing up here is it weren’t for this person”. “I m shocked and amazed, honoured”.

In the last 20 years, the ASC victor has gone on to win the Oscar for Best Cinematography 11 times.

The trophy for best actress went to the young Brie Larson, 26, for Room where she played a young mother poignant sequestered with her child. She did not attend the ceremony as she was shooting the King Kong prequel Kong: Skull Island in Australia. Her trophy was accepted by the film’s director.

The best director category has the same mediocre track record (although BAFTA was the only group to anticipate Roman Polanski’s best director win for The Pianist).

Winslet scored the Best Supporting Actress honor for her role in Steve Jobs, and she dedicated her award to women who have suffered criticism, The Guardian notes.

The issue was also mentioned b y British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen made a reference to the debate as he stood on stage introducing the best actress prize. Each had nine BAFTA nominations, but “Bridge of Spies” won only for Rylance’s performance, while “Carol” was shut out.

For many years, the BAFTAs was largely ignored by Oscar watchers.

The John Crowley directed film was up for a host of awards on the night and walked away with a nod for Outstanding British Film.

“Best documentary went to Amy Winehouse documentary Amy, about the singer who died in 2011″. Apart from these two, Star Wars the force awakens and Steve Jobs also won honours.

Apocalyptic action movie Mad Max: Fury Road took home four awards for make-up and hair, editing, costumes and production design.

Angels Costumes, founded in 1840, has worked with the film industry for more than a century.

Pioneering black American actor Sidney Poitier received a lifetime achievement award and Brooklyn was named best British picture.
