Lamar, Swift, Alabama Shakes, Bieber win early Grammys

Taylor Swift turned heads on Monday night at the 2016 Grammy Awards… It’s very, very good to be Kendrick Lamar right now. Swift also won best pop vocal album for 1989.

“Girl Crush” won songwriters Liz Rose, Hillary Lindsey and Lori McKenna best country song and Little Big Town best country duo/group performance. Lamar paid tribute to his Los Angeles predecessors including Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg, declaring “this for hip hop… we will live forever”.

She was in the middle of rehearsals for her performance in the night show televised live, so 1989 producer Jack Antonoff, also frontman of Bleachers, accepted the pop vocal award and rang her on her cell phone on stage.

Chris Stapleton won the Grammy for best country solo performance for his song, “Traveller”. The album also spawned the massive hit single, “Shake It Off”. From the bold lip to the sleek bob, I loved the way Taylor styled the outfit, giving it a sexy, mature vibe – it was ideal for the award show.

Swift, who scored seven nominations, has already won two gramophone awards in the pre-broadcast ceremony, including best music video for Bad Blood, her collaboration with Lamar. “My parents come every year and every time I lose”, he said. Stevie Wonder and Pentatonix honored the late Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire with an acapella version of “That’s the Way of the World”. Her BFF (and video costar) Selena Gomez was also freaking out, laughing and crying about the trophy win. Adele released her third album, “25” – which has sold 8 million units in the United States – after Grammy eligibility.

The Grammy Awards aren’t always the most exciting award ceremonies out there, although you never know when Kanye West will do something wacky to disrupt the proceedings.

To keep things on track though, one of Swift’s associates/friends, Englishman Ed Sheeran won Best Pop Solo Performance (beating Swift’s Blank Space) with Thinking Out Loud. Expect appearances from Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, The Alabama Shakes, and Chris Stapleton. Can you tell James Taylor I love him?

Other nominees include pop star Justin Bieber, whose hometown is Stratford, Ont., for best dance recording for “Where Are U Now, ” a collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo. The cast of the Broadway hit “Hamilton” performed the musical’s opening number live from NY, and not long after was rewarded with a Grammy for best musical theater album.
